Cela faisait deux ans que les Basques l’attendait… Zegama et Kilian Jornet, la course la plus folle du monde, était de retour ce dimanche 29 mai avec un plateau de rêve aussi bien chez les hommes que chez les femmes.
Du soleil, un terrain sec, une température plutôt clémente, tous les paramètres étaient réunis pour une course parfaite, et avec 30 000 personnes positionnées dans la montée de Sancti Spiritu, les coureurs avaient hâte d’en découdre.
Kilian Jornet s’impose pour la 10ème fois et établit un nouveau record tout comme Nienke Brinkman qui s’offre un premier succès et un record à la clé de 18 minutes meilleur.
Kilian Jornet, une 10ème victoire !
Neuf fois vainqueur à Zegama, Kilian Jornet (Nnormal) est arrivé dans le Pays Basque avec la volonté de repartir avec un dixième succès dans son palmarès.
L’impressionnant plateau réuni sur la ligne de départ n’a pas semblé l’intimider puisque le Catalan a pris les commandes de la course dès le départ, creusant peu à peu un écart avec le record de Stian Angermund. Seul Davide Magnini (Team Salomon, Italie) a réussi un temps à le suivre, avant de se faire lâcher dans la descente. “C’était une belle course, aujourd’hui l’ambiance était spectaculaire on a eu du beau temps”, confiait Kilian Jornet à l’arrivée.

“Ca fait 16 ans que je suis venu pour la première fois ici et revenir voir les organisateurs et les spectateurs c’était pour moi la victoire la plus importante. Ce dixième succès prouve aussi que j’ai continué de progresser, que j’ai gardé mon niveau et moi c’est ça qui m’intéresse ! Ça montre aussi que je peux encore jouer avec les gamins” conclut-il en rigolant.
Pour Davide Magnini (Salomon), cette seconde place derrière Kilian Jornet sonne comme une victoire. « J’avais de bonnes sensations après la saison de ski, mais c’est sûr que faire deuxième derrière Kilian avec ce chrono c’est incroyable. À aucun moment je n’ai cru pouvoir le battre, il est trop fort, surtout en descente, mais j’ai pris un plaisir fou à faire cette montée avec lui et partager avec les spectateurs. »
Manuel Merillas (Scarpa) complète le podium. Après un départ prudent, il a refait son retard dans la partie technique et la descente. « Je suis très content de ce résultat. Zegama n’est pas forcément un format qui me convient avec une première partie très rapide où je me suis contenté de rester concentré et de courir. Puis, dans le technique et dans la descente j’ai pu mieux dérouler et j’ai commencé à revenir et à reprendre des gens. Au final, quand je regarde le temps, faire 3h45 à Zegama c’est fou ! »
Nienke Brinkman écrase la domination
Chez les filles, on attendait un duel, voire un combat à trois, entre Nienke Brinkman (Team Nike Trail, Pays-Bas), Maude Mathys (Team Salomon, Suisse) et Sara Alonso (Team Salomon, Espagne).
Il a bien eu lieu même si la Hollandaise volante a rapidement pris les commandes de la course et ne les a plus jamais rendues. Pour sa première venue à Zegama, Nienke Brinkman ne se contente pas, en effet, de battre Maude Mathys mais s’offre surtout le record de la course. « Je suis vraiment contente même si je suis épuisée. Je ne voulais pas trop en mettre dans les montées mais je pensais que la seconde femme était vraiment proche alors j’ai poussé même dans les derniers kilomètres, je ne voulais pas perdre sur le fil. Cette course est incroyable. Les spectateurs crient tellement fort que tu continues à les avoir dans les oreilles quand tu es partie de cette montée. Si je dois être vraiment honnête je ne m’attendais pas à gagner. J’ai poussé et tout donné au départ car je savais que ça me correspondait et je me sentais vraiment bien, mais j’étais moins préparée pour les montées. Je me suis entraînée pour ça sur les dernières semaines mais j’avais fait tellement de préparation marathon sur route que je ne savais pas ce que ça allait donner. Le Marathon du Mont-Blanc arrive et c’est bon pour moi car c’est encore une longue distance et ça me correspond bien. Ce résultat c’est sûr que ça me donne confiance et surtout un peu moins de pression pour les autres courses parce que je veux vraiment aller à Madère et il ne fallait pas manquer cette première course. »
De son côté Maude Mathys relativise sa deuxième place. « Je suis arrivée avec peu de kilomètres dans les jambes à cause d’une blessure au tendon qui me pénalise. Jusqu’au kilomètre 25 ça allait et après ça a été plus difficile. J’ai vraiment souffert et j’ai eu mal au tendon dans la descente. Donc au final je suis contente de ce résultat et c’est bon pour notre sport d’avoir ce niveau chez les filles. »
La Basque Sara Alonso était quant à elle euphorique au moment de franchir la ligne d’arrivée en troisième position. « C’était le scénario que j’avais dans mes rêves et il est devenu réalité ! Le public m’a porté en criant mon nom tout le long de la course. J’ai croisé ma famille plusieurs fois aussi et ça m’a motivée. J’avais hâte de commencer la saison car je savais que j’étais en forme. Ça commence super bien et je suis rassurée car je sais que cette saison peut être bonne. J’avais une revanche à prendre sur El Hierro et c’est fait ! »
