L’Espagnol Pau Capell a réalisé un véritable tour de force en bouclant en vainqueur l’UTMB 2019 en début d’après-midi, dans un nouveau temps référence (pour le parcours complet) désormais établi à 20h19 :07 (ancien détenu depuis 2015 par Xavier Thévenard en 21h09 :15). Après les victoires de Pablo Villa sur la TDS, de Luis Alberto sur la CCC, et la 2e place de Andreu Simon sur l’OCC, Capell complète un triomphe quasi total pour l’Espagne lors de cette semaine de course.
Capell avale l’UTMB 2019
Parti dès le 2e kilomètre de course, Pau Capell, vainqueur de l’Ultra Trail World Tour 2018 – et en bonne voie de remporter l’édition 2019 grâce à cette victoire – n’a jamais été revu par ses concurrents, sur une édition disputée dans des conditions météo idéales, et même très chaudes depuis cette fin de mâtinée. Un solo intégral comme rarement on en avait vu, surtout à cette vitesse. « Je n’avais pas vraiment imaginé ce plan », dira Pau Capell sur la ligne d’arrivée. « J’avais juste prévu des temps de passage, et il se trouve que j’ai pu les tenir. Rapidement, je me suis retrouvé tout seul, mais ce n’était pas ma volonté. Ça m’a d’ailleurs un peu effrayé » dira celui qui a mis sous l’éteignoir tous les autres prétendants. Déjà vainqueur de trois ultra trail dans cette saison, sur la TransGranCanaria (127km) en Patagonie (158km) et en Autriche en juin dernier (110km), l’athlète et désormais emblème The North Face, réputé comme un boulimique d’entraînement et de compétition, a ajouté une nouvelle ligne à un palmarès déjà très complet, construit sur tous les ultras de la planète.
Vainqueur de la TDS en 2016, Capell aura pris soin de préparer soigneusement son objectif de la saison que constituait cet UTMB. Fin juin, il est venu repérer l’intégralité du parcours sur plusieurs jours, à une vitesse calculée par rapport aux temps de passage effectués par François d’Haene lors de sa victoire en 2017. Il finira sa préparation par un stage en altitude, à Tignes, avant de redescendre à Chamonix avant la compétition. Une préparation aux petits oignons qui en fait le successeur espagnol de Kilian Jornet sur la place du Triangle de l’Amitié, dernier vainqueur espagnol de l’épreuve, en 2011. Xavier Thévenard aura été l’un des seuls favoris à tenir tête à Capell, après les abandons rapides de nombre d’autres prétendants potentiels au podium. Tim Tollefson (maux de tête et vomissements), Hayden Hawks, Zach Miller et Alex Nichols auront une nouvelle fois échoué à porter l’étendard américain sur le plus haut du podium, tous contraints à l’abandon. QI Min (CHI) se sera montré en début de course, avant d’exploser en vol. Côté français, Julien Chorier et Patrick Bringer quitteront la course à mi-parcours, à Courmayeur.
Thévenard, triple vainqueur et prétendant à une 4e couronne, se montrait à la hauteur des attentes d’un public tout acquis à sa cause et restera longtemps à une vingtaine de minutes de Capell à parti du Col de la Seigne, laissant espérer un possible retour. Mais l’ascension vers la Tête aux Vents fut fatale au coureur jurassien, sous un soleil de plomb. Alors que Capell continuait son sur rythme effréné après avoir connu un léger cou de mou au 100e km, Thévenard connaissait un coup d’arrêt dans l’ascension du Col des Montets, pour rester vissé à cette belle seconde place. « Franchement, je suis content que ça s’arrête » dira Xavier, marqué, sur la ligne d’arrivée. « Pau a fait une sacrée perf aujourd’hui. Moi, je suis dans mes plans. J’avais prévu 21h10, je termine en 21h07, il n’y a pas grand chose à dire, mis à part que Pau état intouchable aujourd’hui ». Après sa victoire sur l’Ultra du Mont Fuji et le 90km du Marathon du Mont Blanc, Thévenard réussit lui-aussi une saison pleine, qui le satisfait pleinement. « Je réalise l’une de mes meilleures saisons cette année, et aujourd’hui, c’était sympa de pouvoir courir sous ce beau temps, on a eu le temps de voir les montagnes. C’est là qu’on réalise qu’on a une sacrée chance d’être ici, et de contempler cet univers ; il faut vraiment en prendre soin si les générations futures veulent aussi en profiter comme nous » conclura, philosophe, Thévenard.
Coureur expérimenté de l’Ultra Trail World Tour, le Néo-Zélandais Scot Hawker offre pour sa part à l’Océanie son premier podium sur l’UTMB, en terminant 3e en 21h48, devant le Britannique spécialiste de skyrunning Tom Owens (22h04), et le plus Français de ses compatriotes, Andy Symonds, 5e en 22h35.
L’Amérique sauvée par ses filles
Les coureurs américains devraient peut-être s’enquérir auprès de leurs compatriotes féminines de la recette pour bien figurer sur la course phare et monter sur la plus haute marche du podium. Blessée à une hanche, elle avait dû renoncer, et patienter pour se refaire une santé avant de débarquer à Chamonix, pour la première fois de sa carrière.
La première partie de course féminine aura été animée par celle que beaucoup attendaient au tournant, la Chinoise Miao Yao, vainqueure de la CCC l’an dernier, et qui tentait l’aventure à l’échelon supérieur cette année. Partie tambour battant, l’aventure de la jeune Chinoise s’arrêtera malheureusement en haut du Grand Col Ferret, après un peu plus de 103 km de course. La Chinoise laissait le champ libre à Dauwalter, en embuscade depuis le départ, qui allait passer par tous les états sur la suite de l’épreuve, et notamment par un gros coup de fatigue au niveau de Champex-Lac (km 123). Victime sans doute d’un coup de chaud, Courtney s’arrêtait un long moment au ravitaillement, vomissait, avant de repartir tant bien que mal, avec une avance confortable de près de 45 minutes sur sa première poursuivante d’alors, la Suédoise Mimmi Kotka.
Retrouvant des ressources insoupçonnables, Dauwalter retrouvait au fil des kilomètres un second souffle, pour ne plus être rejointe, et s’offrir son premier sacre à Chamonix, pour sa première participation. Mimmi Kotka, elle, allait connaître une courbe de forme inverse. Sa fin de course fut un long calvaire, la plongeant de la 2e place provisoire à la 12e, à l’heure où nous écrivons ces lignes (20h00). Une autre Suédoise allait saisir l’opportunité de sortir de l’anonymat, en la personne de Kristin BERGLUND, 2e en 25h34 de cette édition 2019. Quant à l’Espagne, elle ne pouvait décidément pas laisser échapper un podium sur cette édition 2019. Maïté Maiora terminait ainsi 3e de l’épreuve, en 25h41.
