Après avoir examiné attentivement toutes les alternatives en accord avec les consignes gouvernementales, mais aussi mené une concertation auprès des coureurs, des collectivités locales et des partenaires, l’équipe d’organisation de l’UTMB® Mont-Blanc a le regret d’annoncer qu’en raison de la pandémie de COVID-19, l’édition 2020 ne pourra pas avoir lieu du 24 au 31 août.
La 19e édition de l’UTMB® Mont-Blanc aura lieu du 23 au 29 août 2021 et traversera, la France, l’Italie et la Suisse.
En attendant 2021, un événement OFF “phygital” pourrait se tenir en août à la fois à Chamonix et partout dans le monde.

Cette décision, prise après avoir consulté la commission médicale de l’UTMB® Mont-Blanc, est la plus responsable pour préserver la santé et la sécurité de tous les participants, qu’il s’agisse des 10 000 coureurs venus de 111 pays, des 100 000 spectateurs et habitants du Pays du Mont-Blanc, des 500 prestataires, 60 partenaires et 2 300 bénévoles.
Plusieurs hypothèses avaient été émises ces dernières semaines et même les dernier jours, allant du maintien à l’annulation en passant par le report en septembre.
D’autres scénarios se sont dessinés avec la possibilité de faire une épreuve différente, un départ en contre la montre, une épreuve unique avec moins de coureurs, un parcours adapté, etc…
Mais comme le rappelle Catherine Poletti, “on ne connait pas aujourd’hui, quelles seront les conditions sanitaires fin août”.

Après l’annulation de l’épreuve en 2010 suite aux condition météorologiques, qui avaient conduit les organisateurs à redonner un départ le lendemain depuis Courmayeur (épreuve remportée par Jez Bragg et Lizzy Hawker) et le parcours de repli en 2012 suite aussi aux conditions climatiques (épreuve remportée par François D’Haene et Lizzy Hawker), c’est un nouvel épisode de la course qui s’écrit avec l’annulation pure et simple de l’édition 2020 suite à cette épidémie de COVID-19.
Remboursement de tous à hauteur de 55% et priorité sur 3 ans
En donnant rendez-vous aux coureurs l’an prochain, l’organisation souhaite faire preuve de responsabilité et de solidarité envers tous les coureurs qui ne pourraient pas participer cette année à l’événement à cause du contexte sanitaire, économique, social et territorial. L’UTMB® Mont-Blanc souhaite également adresser son soutien à ses amis suisses et italiens, pays co-organisateurs de l’événement, mais aussi à tous les acteurs de l’événementiel et de l’outdoor, eux-aussi durement impactés par la pandémie.
Conformément au règlement de l’épreuve, les coureurs inscrits en 2020 bénéficieront d’un remboursement de 55% des frais d’inscription.
L’annulation de l’événement est un réel risque financier pour l’organisation qui a déjà engagé de nombreuses dépenses dans différents secteurs.
L’organisation a mis à jour son site internet pour répondre à toutes les interrogations des coureurs.
Pour chaque coureur, participer à l’événement est une aventure qui se prépare depuis plusieurs années au rythme des entraînements, des points de qualification et du tirage au sort.
Chaque coureur bénéficiera d’une place réservée sur la même course à son choix en 2021, 2022 ou 2023. Une mesure exceptionnelle qui permet davantage de flexibilité.
Ils recevront les modalités d’utilisation de cette réservation par e-mail avant l’ouverture des inscriptions 2021.
Cette mesure s’applique également aux coureurs titulaires d’un dossard solidaire.
