Rien n’est jamais écrit en ultra-trail. Cette discipline si particulière n’a rien d’une science exacte, et elle s’avère rétive au moindre pronostic. On l’oublie parfois un peu trop vite. Et c’est sûrement la leçon à retenir de cette édition 2018 de l’Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc.
Alors que tout le monde annonçait en effet un duel entre Jim Walmsley et Kilian Jornet, celui-ci aura tourné court, pour laisser place au triomphe émouvant du « Petit Prince de l’UTMB® », Xavier Thévenard, pour la 3e fois, lui permettant de rejoindre François d’Haene et Kilian Jornet au nombre de victoires.
Thévenard aura donc laissé le poids de la pression médiatique et populaire aux autres. « Il faut savoir rester humble à l’abord de ce genre de course, sinon la montagne peut rapidement vous rappeler à l’ordre » dira un Xavier Thévenard très ému sur la ligne d’arrivée.
La nuit voyait en effet une hécatombe au sein des favoris annoncés. Jim Walmsley, parti comme d’habitude tambour battant, baissait progressivement pavillon, pour parvenir en 19e position à Courmayeur (ITA). Dans des conditions favorables aux vrais montagnards (froid, vent, pluie, limite pluie neige à 2500m), la coqueluche américaine poursuivra sa descente aux enfers au fil des kilomètres.
Cet UTMB aura aussi prouvé que Kilian Jornet reste un humain. Ce que ses performances stratosphériques ces derniers temps sur toutes les courses à pied où il s’était aligné avaient eu tendance à faire oublier. La voie semblait dès lors un peu plus dégagée pour Zach Miller (USA) et Xavier Thévenard, alors leaders. Les deux hommes restaient groupés jusqu’à La Fouly. Mais la remontée vers Champex Lac était fatale à Miller, qui ne parvenait plus à courir, et qui laissait filer Thévenard, avant d’abandonner. Ce ne serait pas cette année encore qu’un Américain monterait sur la plus haute marche du podium. Le Roumain Robert Hajnal en profitait pour se porter en deuxième position de l’épreuve, devant l’Espagnol Jordi Gamito. L’écart grandissait entre les deux premiers hommes, avec plus d’une demi-heure à Vallorcine, à 20 km de l’arrivée. Il ne restait plus que la montée de la Flégère à gérer pour Thévenard, qui, en vieux briscard de l’ultra, gérait parfaitement son rythme de course pour s’imposer et s’offrir une « troisième étoile ». Le Roumain Robert Hajnal déjouait tous les pronostics et terminait 2e en 21h31, quelques mois après sa 5e place sur le Lavaredo Ultra Trail. Jordi Gamito (ESP), pour sa part, est arrivé ultra affûté sur l’UTMB, avec 12 kilos en moins sur la balance. Ce qui a sans doute participé à sa performance du jour, puisque l’expérimenté Espagnol parviendra à conserver sa 3e place (21h57) sur le podium, après une dernière descente tendue depuis la Flégère, face au menaçant Norvégien CHJØLBERG, finalement 4e.
La course filles aura connu un scénario analogue à celle des hommes. La grandissime favorite, Mimmi Kotka, annoncée imbattable, « mettait le clignotant » dès le 30E kilomètre, aux Contamines, blessée à un genou. Un peu plus tard, la première leader Magdalena Boulet (USA) se retirait à son tour au Lac Combal (km 66), et laissait le leadership à Caroline Chaverot. La Franco-Suisse, lauréate de l’épreuve en 2016, devait malheureusement abandonner à son tour, au niveau du Grand Col Ferret, victime d’une hypothermie.
Les trois grandes favorites hors du coup, les outsiders se retrouvaient à la fête. Deux Italiennes, Francesca Canepa et Katia Fori, s’en donnaient à cœur joie en tête de course. Seulement 8 minutes séparaient les deux femmes à Vallorcine. Mais la dernière montée vers la Flégère était fatale à Fori , qui se faisait reprendre par l’Espagnole Uxue Fraile, déjà 2e en 2015 et 3e en 2016. Fraile décrochait une nouvelle place d’honneur, avec une 2e place, à 5 minutes de Fransesca Canepa, vainqueure en 26h03. “C’est sûrement le plus beau jour de ma vie de sportive” dira l’Italienne sur la ligne d’arrivée. “Je n’avais pas vraiment prévu de gagner. j’avais envisagé une course d’attente avant tout. Partir dans cette optique, c’est difficile car tout le monde te passe. je devais être au-delà de la 20e position féminine aux Contamines. Mais mon idée était de garder du jus pour la fin, et d’aller à mon rythme. Car c’est facile de se faire emporter et de tout gâcher. J’ai réussi à rester calme, je me suis pas inquiété, et finalement ma stratégie a réussi”. La Paloise Jocelyne Pauly portait les couleurs françaises sur le podium, en terminant à la 3e place, après 26h15 d’effort. Un podium féminin 100% Masters sur cette édition 2018.
