Malgré des conditions très difficiles mêlant froid, brouillard, pluie et neige mêlée depuis le départ hier de Chamonix à 18h 30, les favoris de cette édition « historique » – au vu de la densité du plateau Elite – se seront livrés un combat homérique sur les 167km de la boucle proposée. A l’heure du départ, on ne savait trop si les favoris allaient se jauger, se regarder, ou si au contraire ils allaient d’entrée se livrer et partir sur un rythme endiablé. Le premier tiers de la course donnera vite une réponse. Si Kilian Jornet prenait le temps de filmer en direct sur son téléphone les premiers kilomètres de course en toute décontraction, il allait vite ranger le portable dans le sac à dos pour suivre le rythme imposé par François d’Haene, Xavier Thévenard ou Jim Walmsley. Il fallait attendre le col du Bonhomme (km43), pour voir un premier favori, Xavier Thévenard, décrocher légèrement de la tête. Les trois autres leaders allaient continuer leur périple nocturne dans le froid et l’humidité en se tenant en quelques minutes. Les temps de passage prévus par les organisateurs explosaient littéralement sous les coups de boutoir du trio de tête.
A Courmayeur, vers 2h30 du matin, Jim Wamsley possédait 5 minutes d’avance sur le duo Jornet-Dhaene. Soit après l’ascension du Grand Col Ferret (km 102), soumis à un vent tempétueux, et à des chutes de neige qui rendaient la progression dantesque. Au sommet, Walmsley et d’Haene passaient de concert, Jornet digérant un coup de moins ressenti depuis Courmayeur. La longue descente vers la Fouly scellera néanmoins le sort de l’Américain, transi de froid, et victime de grosses ampoules. Un arrêt prolongé à La Fouly, puis un autre à Champex-Lac, et les mots de son assistant pour lui redonner le moral, et ne pas vivre un nouvel abandon comme sur la dernière Western States. « Je pense que comme certains autres coureurs américains par le passé, Jim n’aura peut-être pas assez pris en considération l’aspect « montagne » de cette épreuve, et bien appréhendé les conditions météo » analysera Christophe Aubonnet. « J’ai usé de mon expérience du raid multisport pour le remotiver. Beau joueur, Kilian Jornet, qu’on n’a pas l’habitude de retrouver sur la 2e marche d’un podium, saluera la prestation de son équipier du team Salomon. « C’était une compétition très dure, qui est partie très vite d’entrée. J’ai eu un coup de moins bien à Courmayeur, j’ai essayé de conserver un écart raisonnable avec François. J’ai récupéré un peu à Champex mais pas assez pour rattraper François. C’était un super moment. Je savais que François serait mon principal adversaire, il a toujours montré beaucoup de classe et de talent sur les longues distances, et il mérite largement cette victoire » concluait Jornet, avant de donner rendez-vous à D’Haene l’an prochain pour qu’ils puissent se départager au nombre de victoires (3 chacune pour les deux athlètes désormais). Les Etats-Unis rataient encore le coche d’une victoire qui se refuse à ses coureurs depuis quinze ans à Chamonix.
