Le montant des « prize money » témoigne de la croissance et de la popularité du trail et de la course de montagne.
Du 11 au 14 novembre 2021, les premiers Championnats du Monde de Course de Montagne et de Trail se dérouleront à Chiang Mai, en Thaïlande, pour déterminer les champions du monde féminins et masculins – A LIRE ICI.

“La beauté de la course à pied est qu’elle peut être pratiquée par n’importe qui et n’importe où. La course de montagne et de trail en sont un parfait exemple. A la World Athletics, nous sommes ravis de soutenir cette étape importante pour les adeptes de la course de montagne et de trail, qui consiste à mettre en place des championnats du monde combinés. 
Cet événement, qui rassemblera des coureurs de tous les continents dans un esprit de bienveillance et de compétition, est une étape importante dans la croissance et la reconnaissance de cette discipline passionnante“, a déclaré le président de World Athletics, Sebastian Coe, quadruple médaillé olympique au cours de sa propre carrière de coureur, dont les médailles d’or du 1500 mètres aux Jeux olympiques de 1980 et 1984.

L’International Trail Running Association (ITRA) a relevé une croissance annuelle régulière d’environ 12 % dans la pratique du trail et prévoit un pic de croissance après la pandémie.

La Championne du Monde en titre chez les dames Blandine L’Hirondel, garde une motivation intacte et pourrait être une des candidates au doublé :
« Je n’envisage pas une année sportive sans les mondiaux, je suis rentrée dans ce milieu du trail par cette porte et par l’équipe de France et les championnats du monde resteront mon objectif principal 2021. Porter le maillot reste une grosse motivation, ça représente pour moi le haut niveau et cet objectif du mois de Novembre est aussi pimenté par le fait d’aller en Thaïlande, un pays que je ne connais pas ».
Nicolas Martin, Vice-Champion du Monde 2016 et 5ème en 2019 a toujours les yeux qui brillent : « Représenter mon pays a toujours été un rêve de gosse. C’est universel à tous les sports, ça ne s’achète pas ! Prendre part aux mondiaux a souvent été une priorité dans mes choix de carrière. J’ai connu ma première sélection en 2013 et je regrette qu’une décennie plus tard, il soit encore nécessaire de faire des choix pour les athlètes. Que les mondiaux ne soient pas devenus le rendez-vous incontournable pour l’ensemble des athlètes élites..
Cette année, il faudra encore faire un arbitrage entre mondiaux de trail et GTWS par exemple. Nous savons d’avance que le niveau sera dilué sur ces 2 évènements. Je crois que notre sport perd en crédibilité avec ce manque de lisibilité. Est-ce qu’un jour, nous allons tous nous réunir pour créer un calendrier lisible avec des dates protégées comme dans le cyclisme par exemple ? Avec des mondiaux tous les 2 ans, il me parait possible de trouver une date qui permettent aux meilleurs athlètes de se réunir sur cet évènement tout en laissant de l’espace aux courses historiques de notre sport.
Si je suis appelé à représenter mon pays, je ferais de mon mieux pour défendre les couleurs de la France ».
Le champion du monde de Skyrunning et triple Champion du monde de Trail, Luis Alberto Hernando, ajoute : “Je suis impatient à l’idée des Championnats du Monde en novembre, qui vont réunir les meilleurs coureurs de trail et de montagne du monde. J’aimerais que ce soit ‘la course de l’année’ et que, comme tous les Championnats du Monde d’autres sports, ce soit la course à laquelle tous les coureurs veulent participer.”
Ragna Debats, Championne du Monde de Trail 2018 et Championne d’Europe de Skyrunning ajoute : “J’ai hâte de participer aux Championnats du Monde de cette année. Ma victoire en 2018 à la Penyagolosa Trails (Espagne) est l’accomplissement le plus précieux de ma carrière de coureuse. Je m’attends à ce que les meilleurs athlètes du monde participent aux différentes courses en étant au meilleur de leur forme ! J’espère me retrouver parmi elles pour me battre pour la victoire !“.

Les meilleurs athlètes du monde accompagnés des dizaines de milliers de coureurs et de familles de tous les continents ; un retour célébré par tous”.
Située à 700 km au nord de Bangkok, sur les rives de la rivière Ping, Chiang Mai est un cadre idéal pour accueillir l’inauguration des Championnats du Monde, grâce à son environnement montagneux, à sa réputation croissante en matière d’événements sportifs de masse en plein air et à sa grande capacité d’accueil pour les nombreux participants, supporters et familles attendus.
Le coureur élite Espagnol, Pau Capell a ajouté : “Lancer un seul championnat du monde avec différentes distances est la meilleure façon de valoriser les coureurs les plus compétitifs.
